Following the 2025 running of The Preakness Stakes, Pimilico Race Course began undergoing a $400 million renovation. Knowing that the Grandstand and surrounding buildings were going to be demolished, the ladies of the Pimlico Preservation Project were allowed to search every room and go through every box and container to rescue any historical memorabilia related to the 156-year history of Pimlico and The Preakness.
The ladies of the Pimlico Preservation Project recovered equipment, trophies, silks, photos, and apparel destined for dumpsters before the massive state-led demo of the facility commenced. All of the collected items were then auctioned to individuals around the country to benefit charitable foundations including Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue and other equine aftercare organizations such as After the Races, Beyond the Wire, and the Foxie G Foundation.
The Pimlico Preservation Project was founded by horse racing enthusiasts, Sallyellen Hurst, Sally Eck, and Robin Coblyn. In addition to their work with preserving the history of Pimlico, the ladies work for Mid Atlantic Horse Rescue. Northern Kentucky resident, affectionately known by his nickname, KMAC, is a horse racing enthusiast and horseplayer. KMAC is also known across the Worldwide Web as Mr. K for his handicapping prowess or lack there of. KMAC attended the 2011 Preakness which happened to be the debut of the now infamous Kegasus.
After hearing a radio interview with Sallyellen Hurst where she mentioned recovering the Kegasus costume in her search and rescue efforts at Pimlico, KMAC reached out to her in an effort to acquire Kegasus. KMAC explained his love and admiration for Kegasus to Sallyellen and that the preservation of his legacy was of utmost importance. This conversation led to an agreement to allow Kegasus to live out his years in the hands of someone that would provide him with the aftercare he deserves.
Kegasus was boxed-up and put on an actual horse van from Pimlico to Kentucky and landed at KMAC's home in June of 2026. Just when everyone thought that Kegasus was put out to pasture after the 2012 Preakness, he now has a second chance at greatness.
